Well, there is some sort of history behind it, so I wanted to talk about the origins of the aupea.
The aupea is the official currency of Bideogamu. Following the Demon War, the five human nations of Bideogamu attempted to ratify their own currencies. This turned out to be a disaster, many of the nations were in the midst of heavy rebuilding after the wars, and the people moved back and forth between nations very frequently as a result of displacement and the growing issue of homelessness.
In addition, many soldiers who were left in their stations after driving the demons off of Hitoriku decided to simply stay where they were. Economically speaking, these soldiers had little to live on, and many nations initially couldn't afford to spend the money it took to make the coins.
Several bankers from around the world, with the blessings of the fledging new countries of Bideogamu, came together to at least solve the currency problem. A new, multinational currency was developed. It was called the "aupea".
The aupea has three different coins. The first is the "bronze aupea", which is a simple bronze coin. This, depending on the region of the world you lived in, is probably enough to buy a single potato. The "silver aupea" is worth a hundred bronze coins. A silver aupea was often enough to buy something significantly more expensive, such as a bed. A golden aupea, the most valuable of the three, is worth a hundred silver coins. One could buy a house or a high quality sword with this kind of money, and a single gold aupea is enough to live on for three years.
Since gold aupea are so expensive and valuable, though, many minor merchants will not take them because they can't reasonably give back change for it. It's usually considered the currency of the rich, instead.
The World Bank of Bideogamu is currently on a neutral site, the same island as the Magic Council, northeast of Strife. |
