The Eight Powers refer to the eight Seraphic elements that we use for magic.
Of the Eight Powers, six of them are classified as "natural elements" and are closely linked to one another. A magic user with an affinity for any of these six can theoretically tap into any other one, though it is very difficult (some might say impossible) to do so. The six natural elements are the powers of fire, ice, lightning, earth, wind, and water.
The seventh power is the power of light, associated with the Seraph of Light. Light functions on a different level, and if one has an affinity for light, they can't use anything but the power of light. It's also rare to be born with an affinity for light, and as light is the only element capable of healing injuries, most light-users function as doctors or healers.
The eighth power is the power of shadow, associated with the Seraph of Shadows. Shadow, like light, can only be used on its own. A shadow-user cannot use any of the other seven powers, but they're gifted with a particularly strong power.
