The Emberton Republic Mike Renner on 2009-04-30 @ 23:27:12
Located on the southern end of Hitoriku, the Emberton Republic is a desert country based in its merchantile industry. It borders Strife on the north. Of the five human nations of Bideogamu, Emberton's population is the most spread out, though it's actually the second-most populated country in the world. Most of its people live by shorelines or by Muspel, the nation's capital that lies on the mouth of the Amber River.
History
Emberton was once simply a desert, with very few human settlements. It wasn't until the humans discovered how fertile the land at where modern-day Muspel was that they began to settle in the harsh desert. A small kingdom was built during this time. During the Demon War, however, the Demons destroyed nearly every human village in the country, concluding with the sacking of the capital. The king and his followers fled the country, abandoning its people to its fate.
Emberton's armies were scattered and disorganized, and their morale was down after the repeated losses, and all hope initially seemed lost.
Then, three siblings from a secret order appeared. The eldest brother was Garland Shevron, "the Inferno", who utilized a flaming sword to incinerate his enemies. The middle sister was Verona Shevron, known as "the Undying", who was a skilled martial artist who evidently couldn't die. The youngest brother was Faust Shevron, known as "the Blade", who was the best swordsman in Emberton. These three led what they could of the remaining Emberton armies into a series of guerrilla attacks on the demons.
This culminated in a rallying of the tattered remains of Emberton's army into a force that sieged the demon's stronghold where modern-day Gideon lies, today. After two weeks of the siege, the army of Emberton received reinforcements from Strife, which allowed them to storm the stronghold and take it.
After the war's conclusion, the Shevron siblings declined any awards and simply returned to their normal lives. The original king never returned, and so the kingdom fell into the hands of a couple of common humans who ruled the kingdom for hundreds of years. However, poor racial relations between the common humans and the native Iliwati race caused a revolution to occur that eventually led to the Kingdom of Emberton becoming the Emberton Republic.
Government
I'd like to think that Emberton's method of ruling over its country is sound. A bunch of nationally elected politicians gathered in the Chamber of Ideals in Muspel, deciding policies within Emberton. That being said, the only people who actually run for senatorial seats in the Chamber are merchants.
So, as you might expect, the only ideals these senators really seem to be interested in protecting are their own investments. They're also easily bribed and bought off, too, which makes introducing beneficial policies that would even remotely harm their businesses into a big pain.
I'm thankful I live in Masguard and don't have to deal too much with the consequences of my words, though. I hear some who are particularly vocal about the government's corruption simply vanish.
Ooh, it gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
Culture & Technology
Emberton is a country primarilly consisting of the Iliwati, who aren't too far different from common humans like us, save for a different skin color. Although it's a stereotype to think this way, most of the Iliwati care a lot about money and business. Much of the culture is based primarilly on business, as a result.
Muspel, for example, is often called "the Market City", and there are many legitimate and illegitimate businesses in the city. Business has so much to do with Emberton's culture that it infiltrates its entire government structure as well.
I think the best way to describe the people of Emberton is this: The best way you can gain information in Emberton is to pay someone to tell it to you, and you can't often be sure if it's going to be full of lies or not.
I think I lost an entire week's pay just learning this match. Oh, my poor purse...
Holidays & Events
December 25th is celebrated as "War's End Day", the anniversary of the day that the Demon War was concluded. It is celebrated with gifts and isn't limited to Emberton, as it is celebrated all over Hitoriku.
In addition, May 19th is celebrates as "Foundation Day", the anniversary of the day that the revolt against the Kingdom of Emberton met its end. On this day, there is a huge sale at all businesses in Emberton, which makes this day and the weeks leading up to War's End Day into the biggest shopping days in any given Embertonian year.
Climate
Emberton is an arid, dry country with a huge desert that spans from coast to coast. I can't really begin to describe how hot it is in Emberton during a warm year, especially in summer. It's like getting set on fire while you're covered in wood chips, or something to that effect. The best advice I can give you is to not travel the desert unless you're well prepared and stay out of Emberton if you don't already live there.
If you have business is Emberton and can't avoid going, then for the Goddess's sakes, bring lots of water and conserve as much of it as you can. Dress to protect your skin against the heat while at the same time insulating yourself from it. And above all else, hire some sort of guide who knows how to travel the desert. And hope to the Goddesses that they don't simply strand you in the middle of nowhere after squeezing every bit of aupea out of you until you're broke and dying from thirst.
...Not that this has happened to me, mind you.
